Before practice

  • Use this card for personal Resource Work practice. In a group, follow the facilitator and local support route.
  • For personal practice, use only a familiar example already considered in the three-category lesson.
  • Be seated or physically settled. Do not use a practice while driving, operating equipment or doing anything that requires continuous outward attention.
  • Keep your eyes open if that gives you more choice or orientation.
  • Do not search deliberately for painful material.
  • Do not begin if you are currently highly distressed or disoriented.
  • Do not begin if you cannot choose freely whether to continue.
  • Do not begin if you are worried that you may be unable to stop or return attention to the present room.
  • Know what qualified support you would use if discomfort continues after you stop.

Pause or stop when

  • the selected memory, image or impression becomes painful, unwanted, confusing or unsuitable;
  • anything painful, unwanted, confusing or uncertain appears;
  • orientation to the present room becomes difficult;
  • pressure or loss of choice appears;
  • you feel compelled to force an image, emotion or result;
  • attention moves into material you did not choose to approach; or
  • returning to the room becomes difficult.

Stopping is a valid use of the method boundary. It is not failure.

Reorient

  1. Stop following the words and stop directing attention to the resource.
  2. Open your eyes if they were closed.
  3. Feel the support of the chair, floor or surface beneath you.
  4. Look around the room and notice ordinary present details.
  5. Name where you are and the present date or time.
  6. Decide what you will do next before beginning any other exercise.

Close

  • Do not continue simply to complete the exercise.
  • Do not treat a temporary change as proof that a problem is resolved.
  • Notice what happened only after you are oriented to the present. A private note is optional, and no score or required result applies.
  • Keep personal notes on your own device or paper. Do not upload or send them to the Deep Emotional Work Academy (DEWA).
  • If unwanted distress or disorientation continues, use qualified local support.
  • If there is immediate danger, use local emergency or crisis resources.
